Chapter One: Introduction

1.1 Background of the Study
Photojournalism has long been a powerful medium for capturing and conveying the realities of humanitarian crises. Through compelling visual narratives, photojournalists draw attention to issues such as displacement, poverty, and natural disasters. In Jalingo LGA, a region often grappling with crises ranging from communal conflicts to environmental challenges, photojournalism provides a critical avenue for documenting these events and advocating for intervention. By evoking emotional responses and fostering empathy, photojournalism bridges the gap between affected communities and decision-makers (Abdullahi & Musa, 2023).

1.2 Statement of the Problem
Despite its potential impact, the role of photojournalism in highlighting humanitarian crises in Jalingo LGA remains underexplored. Challenges such as limited resources, ethical concerns, and access to crisis zones hinder its effectiveness. This study examines how photojournalism contributes to documenting and addressing humanitarian issues in the region.

  2. What challenges do photojournalists face when reporting on humanitarian issues in the area?
  3. How can the impact of photojournalism on crisis reporting be improved?

  2. H1: Compelling visual narratives enhance public empathy and response to crises.
  3. H2: Addressing logistical and ethical challenges improves the effectiveness of photojournalism.

1.6 Significance of the Study
The study underscores the importance of visual storytelling in humanitarian advocacy, providing recommendations for photojournalists, media organizations, and humanitarian agencies to optimize their efforts in crisis documentation and response.

1.7 Scope and Limitations of the Study
The study focuses on photojournalism's role in documenting humanitarian crises in Jalingo LGA, excluding other forms of journalism or regions.
